George Iona, meilleur grimpeur au cocotier au monde

Le aito des îles Cook, George Iona, est sacré champion du monde de grimper au cocotier lors du Heiva Tu’aro maohi 2017. L’épreuve de ce premier championnat du monde s’est déroulée ce samedi 15 juillet, dans les jardins du Musée des Îles.

C’est un peu la surprise de cette première épreuve mondiale qui a réuni seize participants samedi dans les jardins du Musée de Tahiti et des îles. Le jeune athlète originaire des îles Cook, George Iona, a remporté le championnat du monde de grimper au cocotier, devant le Samoan, Fiapa’i Ellio, et le Tahitien, Lenoir Tainui.

Fiapa’i Ellio partait favori pour cette épreuve, puisqu’il avait remporté la première place lors des sélectives de vendredi. Il avait une avance de 24 centièmes sur le second, George Iona. Lors du premier passage, l’athlète a réussi à conserver sa place avec près de 40 centièmes d’avance sur le second, avec un temps de 5’’63. Mais lors du deuxième passage, George Iona a grimpé au cocotier en 5’’62, soit près de 40 centièmes de moins que son premier score. Il a dépassé le favori d’un centième, se propulsant alors sur la première marche du podium. Enoch Laughlin, organisateur de l’événement, revient sur cette épreuve.

Le jeune homme s’est dit « fier et heureux d’avoir pu remporter ce championnat ». Du côté de Fiapa’i Ellio, c’est la déception puisque le titre lui échappe de peu, à un centième près. Le Tahitien, Tainui Lenoir finit sur la troisème marche du podium, avec 6’’22.
